2. 5G-Industry Summit

Online-Event

5G accelerates digitization and networking in production

Automated and efficient production processes are indispensable in industrial manufacturing – they are a clear competitive advantage. Networking with the help of 5G networks, but also new WLAN technologies, will bring about a radical change here. Extremely high data rates with which thousands of sensors can be integrated or response times in the millisecond range will turn many productions upside down. The decisive factor here is the availability of an adapted and fast wireless network. One option for companies is their own industrial 5G networks, which can be set up at industrial sites of any size and can also be specifically adapted to the special requirements of a production and infrastructure, such as high bandwidths, short latencies and improved availability and security.

The 5G Industry Summit answers your questions:

  • What does 5G mean for manufacturing companies?
  • Do campus networks make sense, and who should operate them?
  • What about the issue of security?
  • What impact will 5G have on your own products?
  • When do I need 5G, and when are LTE or WLAN sufficient?
  • What requirements do companies have to meet for public subsidies?

Target group

The Summit is aimed primarily at managing directors, development and production managers who are concerned with the introduction of a 5G network, but also with automation and networking in production.

The event is supported by our partners in South Africa, Turkey and Morocco. The conference language is German, with simultaneous English and French translation.

10:40

5G in the “factory of the future” – a practical report

  • Tom Richter, Global Head of Discrete & Process Manufacturing Verticals, Nokia
  • Giuliano Persico, Manager, Patents & Research – Tech Patent Management, Demag Cranes & Components GmbH

Demag Cranes & Components GmbH has already been using a private campus network in its research factory at the Wetter (Ruhr) site since 2019.
The research activities focus on use cases of collaborative machine control, such as tandem and smart tandem operation of overhead cranes, M2M communication between different machines from different manufacturers, indoor localization and many more.
This presentation will give an overview of why and how a private campus network is used and it will give an outlook on future activities for the “factory of the future” that require an upgrade to 5G.

11:00

Huawei 5GtoB for Industry

Zaheen Khan, Head of Wireless Marketing & Strategy, Huawei Western Europe

The digitization of industry is a huge task, but the development statuses of these digital infrastructures in the various industries are still very different and the application scenarios also vary. In addition, corresponding digital standards are not yet always in place. Industry players are called upon to work together to establish comprehensive 5GtoB standards and an ecosystem, thereby advancing the digitization of the industry.

In this context, Huawei combined the power of 5GtoB with cutting-edge technologies such as network slicing and edge computing to develop the 5G Virtual Private Network solution for various industries.

5G private networks play a key role in integrating 5G into vertical industries. A 5G-powered industry solution will be critical to ensure the efficiency, reliability, and high bandwidth of vertical industries and reduce costs.

11:20

The architectures of private 5G networks

Tim Simon Leßmann, Strategic Product Manager, Phoenix Contact

5G promises many innovations for use in the industrial environment. However, it will still take time until all innovations are specified and available in the form of industrial products. Already today, the first industrial 5G routers and other end devices are available that are based on 3GPP Release 15 and enable high broadband connections. Private 5G networks are also available, can be built and tested. However, there are different ways and architectures to build and operate private networks. Then there is the choice of the right provider for your company. Which model suits you? What are the advantages of operating a private 5G network already today? And can I operate a private mobile network at all? This presentation will provide you with a foundation to answer these questions and give you an outlook on how you can develop new concepts for communication in industrial plants for your company.

11:40

5G – Importance for Industrial Connectivity; Application, Advantages and Possibilities of the New Mobile Telecommunications Standard 5G in Machine Communication and Industrial IoT

            • Dimitri Block, Technology Developer Electronics, Weidmüller Interface GmbH & Co. KG

13:00

5G performance from an application perspective – approaches and experiences

Dr. Lisa Underberg, Researcher, Institute for Automation and Communication (ifak Magdeburg)

5G will revolutionize industrial automation – or so we’ve been hearing for years in the media and at conferences around us. Now 5G is finally here, and yet there are more open questions than ever. Especially because, from an industrial application’s point of view, 5G is mostly just one part of a more complex communication network. This presentation will explain why performance testing of a communication network has to start from the application point of view, which approach is target-oriented and which experiences the team “Radio in Automation” of ifak Magdeburg has gained with it so far.

13:30

Industrial 5G – for the industry of tomorrow

Sander Rotmensen, Director Industrial Wireless Communication, Siemens AG

Industrial 5G opens the door to comprehensive wireless networking of production, maintenance and logistics. High data rates, reliable high-performance broadband transmission and ultra-short latency times will enable a significant increase in efficiency and flexibility in industrial value creation. Learn more about the current state of the technology for use in industry!

14:00

Legal basis and general overview of security requirements in public telecommunications networks

Elena Meiser, German Federal Network Agency

The rapid roll-out of 5G networks is of outstanding political and economic importance for Germany. In the view of the Federal Network Agency, issues relevant to industry and security are of equal importance. With regard to the security as well as the state of the art of networks and services in telecommunications, the Federal Network Agency, in cooperation with the Federal Office for Information Security and the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, has drawn up comprehensive security requirements for public telecommunications networks and publicly accessible telecommunications services. This presentation will provide you with a general overview of the security requirements for telecommunications networks and telecommunications services and their legal framework.

14:30

Funding for 5G infrastructure and 5G applications

Roy Göring, Project Manager, hannoverimpuls GmbH

The presentation provides companies with an overview of investment- and innovation-related subsidies for 5G infrastructure and 5G applications within the framework of state- and federal-specific subsidies. It will be shown which goals are pursued with the programs and which requirements companies have to fulfill in order to successfully acquire public grants.

15:00

Have a break…

15:15

Application scenarios for 5G in the industrial environment

Dr.-Ing. Daniel Knopp, Head of Industrial Trucks, GÖTTING KG

The possibilities associated with 5G are enormous and open up new industrial fields of application. Götting KG set the course early on and, within the scope of the research projects and practical implementations presented, explored the limits of today’s radio systems in order to have a technologically solid jumping-off point for the accompanying optimizations with the spread of 5G.

15:35

Panel discussion: 5G or no 5G?

5G campus networks are paving the way for the so-called “smart factory,” in which machines, processes, robots, products, tools and people are reliably and flexibly networked with each other. Unlike wired networking, mobile technology enables more flexible and dynamic production.

The panel will discuss, among other things:

  • What added value do 5G campus networks offer to manufacturing companies in Germany?
  • For which applications is 5G attractive in the factory of the future?
  • How does politics support the development of these campus networks?
  • What is the current status of pilot projects? What experience is currently available here?
  • What operator models are available – not least for small and medium-sized enterprises?
  • What are the costs of setting up a 5G campus network?
  • What are the challenges?
  • What is the best way to proceed?
  • What are the alternatives to 5G for the smart factory?

The panelists are:

  • Stefan Muhle, State Secretary at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics, Labor, Transport and Digitalization
  • Marcus Eibach, Project Director 5G, Deutsche Messe AG
  • Meik Gawron, German Federal Network Agency
  • Zaheen Khan, Head of Wireless Marketing & Strategy, Huawei Western Europe
  • Tom Richter, Global Head of Discrete & Process Manufacturing Verticals, Nokia
  • Sander Rotmensen, Director Industrial Wireless Communication, Siemens AG
